Know a Lyric (pt 1): "Such a Long Time"

Such a Long Time © 2002 Gregory M. Smith (1.1/4)

I look up at the dark hazy sky and I know it will soon be blue.
And, the spring that's in the air tonight turns my mind to something new.

No more cold winter blues.
I wanna run in the street with no shoes.

CHORUS
'Cause it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!
'Cause it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!

It feels, oh, like it's been years since I felt the touch of a girl.
And, that's what I wanna feel tonight. One kiss and I'm in another world.

I only want you to stay.
Don't leave! Believe when I say,

CHORUS
That it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!
Yeah, it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!

I won't risk it all and take my time. Can't let your love get away from me.
'Cause I've got a spirit that needs to fly and I need your body to set it free.

Give me a chance. Let it fly!
Love me and don't let it die.

CHORUS
'Cause it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!
Yeah, it's been building up inside of me for such a long time!

Know a Lyric (pt 2): "Apart"

Apart © 2009 Gregory M. Smith (1.2/4)

Do you know how it feels to be apart?
Sittin' wonderin' if your baby's thinking about you?
How's my better half living?
I hope she's having fun...

But, not too much fun. Oh, no.
'Cause I'm not having fun.
And, I just want to say to her,

CHORUS
"Girl, you and I weren't meant to have our world torn apart.
And, even though it doesn't feel the same as it did at the start,
You know I believe in you and in you and me.
You and I were never meant to be apart.

SOLO 1

Does this jealousy ever drive you mad?
Do you ever get scared? Maybe she doesn't love you?
Is this the story-line's ending?
Have I seen this one before?

Don't want to wanna watch anymore. Oh, no.
'Cause it don't look like fun.
And, I still want to say to her,

CHORUS

SOLO 2

BREAKDOWN
You and I weren't meant to have our world torn apart.
And, even though it doesn't feel the same as it did at the start...

Know a Lyric (pt 4): "Give Me a Reason"

Give Me a Reason © 2009 Gregory M. Smith (1.4/4)

Hold on to what you've got.
Your future doesn't lie with hers.
Don't give in. Please! Won't you just hold on?
You know where you've got to go.

Give me a reason.
One that's airtight.
A justification for why I should hold you for one more night.
And, tell me slowly
So I'll understand,
So that in a little while I'll be eating from the palm of your hand.

CHORUS
You're gonna give me a reason, baby,
Why I should stay till the morning light.
And, I can't think of a reason to say, "Goodnight."

Can you find a solution?
One that makes sense?
At this stage of the game, I'm not about leaving things up to chance.
You're a pretty girl.
One with sweet kisses, too.
I guess we just get along too well and I've got other things that I need to do.

CHORUS x 2

ORGAN SOLO

BREAKDOWN
Sometimes, I think that I love you,
But I just can't be sure.
I tell you, I'll end this all right now if you just change the locks on your door.

CHORUS x 2
You're gonna give me! How, you're gonna give me!

Rock n Roll-Rooftop Photo Shoot

Awesome rock n roll photo shoot yesterday on my rooftop with photographer, Ahmed Klink. Got some sick images. Crazy, beautiful sunset looking out across the Harlem River and over to Manhattan Island. Can't wait to see the final images. Then, it was off to an all-you-can-eat-for-two-hours sushi and saki (not all-you-can-drink) with friends replete with good-time, raunchy conversation spearheaded by your truly.

Tonight is the second-to-last rehearsal (and first with the full band!) before the 15th Annual Songbird Show at Don't Tell Mama on Restaurant Row in Manhattan. This will be the first time I will be performing any of my original songs with a band of any kind. Don't miss it! See details:

Summer in the Studio (pt 1)

So, I just completed a productive ten hours over two days of sangin'
and drummin' my lil' ol' heart out to the tunes of "Apart" and "Such a
Long Time," respectively... y'all. Topped my best vocally and laid
down drums 4 the 1st time EVA! Word. Respectively again... Y'all.

Big thanks to Patrick Hughes - or "Huggies," as he is affectionately
known in some small circle somewhere - for lending me his pro-
quality crashes and hi-hat!

Learned a few things this time around. Mainly, that I should use
nylon-tipped drumsticks instead of wood-tipped sticks when recording
to get a sound, particularly on the cymbals, that's easier to record.
I have before-and-after video of laid-back drummer-Greg versus beat-
the-drums-as-hard-as-possible drummer-Greg (respectively, y'all) that
is quite telling as to the consequences of using wrong-material-
tipped drumsticks. :*(

Moral of the story: Bring more food to the studio and use nylon-
tipped drumsticks when recording drums!

On my thilly way back to New York Thity. Next studio session is
August 19. Can't wait!

Tissue Re-Growth

Well, soooooo much has happened in the last three (now four) months
that, I have blogs waiting in the queue! So, I'm a little behind in
publishing them. Please forgive. I wrote the following on March 19, 2009.

DIG:

After much deliberation, squeamishness and, apparently, whining -
not to mention a mountain of dirty laundry - I was somehow able to
start re-growing the cojones that were surgically removed by Dr.
Lyfsabich a few months ago. I must have reptile genes in me. But,
while I'm on the right track, my gonads are still not back to full-size,
as it has only been a few days. And, rocky ones at that.

The work log looks like this:
- Booked 2 (now 3) shows on the Lower East Side.
- Ran a flight of stairs 15x (420 steps). (Statue of Liberty has 354)
- Did laundry
- Polished my set some more
- And, of course, taught all my weekly guitar lessons

Hmm... The schedule cupboard looks a little bare. What can I add?
Let's take look-see, shalln't we?

To polishing, booking, stairs, teaching, and laundry I will add...

1. More laundry
2. Weekly rehearsals with the band (current members include my ego and id)
3. More booking
4. More auditioning musicians
5. WRITING!
6. Blogging

That's a good start. Sad fact that I'm having to climb out of the
abyss, but I am climbing. No rappel devices, carabiners, or climbing
rope neitha. Then again, who needs 'em.

What HAS Been Happening? [Part 2 of (wouldn't you like to know?)]

On September 1, 2007, I picked up and U-Hauled for the Capitol of
Capital.  Actually, I didn't have enough stuff to fill a moving van.
My roommate-to-be borrowed a dinky, dark blue, Chevy van with an
intense alignment issue and hyper-questionable brakage (dude).

We were scheduled to meet Person X to get the keys to our
one-and-a-quarter bedroom apartment at twelve o'clock noon, but, in
stereotypical musician/artist-fashion, we arrived just in time for
dinner at the corner deli.

Inspired as we were by our new surroundings, we were almost
magically able to hustle the keys to our new McCastle in Hell's
McKitchen from the deli owner's steely grasp.  You could say we
reeled them in.  We spent a lot of money and we spent a lot of time;
but, at that moment, we knew we had become Nueva Yorkinos!  We
had the giant gashes - huge chunks of financial flesh ripped out and
away from our bank accounts by the broker fee - to prove it!

In the following weeks, we would take great pleasure in complaining
about all "fucking tourists."  Har-dee har, indeed.
